A little over a half dozen years ago, Jill Sheffield became the CEO of the Carmel Foundation. Prior to Jill Sheffield, the Carmel Foundation was a nice, warm and friendly senior center. Since the arrival of Jill Sheffield, the Carmel Foundation feels like a cold, heartless corporation.

overheard a gentleman ask “if I wrote a letter to Jill about the tough pork chops, do you think it would do any good?
BAD combo: tough pork chops and lightweight steak knives. Had dinner at the Whaling Station and it had heavy duty steak knives for the world’s most tender meat…go figure!
The Carmel Foundation seriously needs to donate its steak knives to Goodwill and replace them with sharper blades and bigger handles. As we age, many of us (including most women) develop arthritis. Smaller handles are painful for arthritic hands.
I have a friend in Carmel who already has the flu. No way I’m going to wait to get my flu shot at the Carmel Foundation. I’m going to get my flu shot asap. If you want yours, you can get it at Ordway or CVS or RiteAid or Safeway Drugs.
Now I have two friends who have the flu. I saw one of them and it is a nasty flu. You do not want it. Do not wait to get your flu shot at the Carmel Foundation because you very likely will catch the flu before the flu shots are finally given at the Foundation. WHY is the CF always the LAST place to give flu shots.
It really seems as though the CF no longer cares about its seniors, like it did during the era of John Freitas. John was caring. Jill retire, so we can have John back!

Back in the day of John and Gayle (Jill and Kelly’s predecessors) salmon Fridays were a stand in line to get a table day. Now there is no wait ever, not even for $5 salmon.
Is ie because seniors quit liking salmon?
No.
Is it because $5 is too much for salmon?
No.
So why is it?
It’s because the only way seniors can vote is with their feet, and seniors are voting NO on Kelly, Jill and Jill’s go-to guy, Carlos

Anne Albano and Linda Lee both took early retirement to get away from Jill. All others were either fired by Jill or were driven off by Jill.
Jill Sheffield knew that she could NOT get away with firing Ms. Lee and Ms .Albano because Ms Lee had a rich-mama and Ms. Albano a rich-hubby, both of whom would have financed attorneys to file wrongful termination lawsuits.
Jill Sheffield knew that she COULD get away with firing Ms. Spake and Ms. Cureton because Ms. Spake was a widow and Ms, Cureton was a bachelorette. Neither Ms. Spake nor Ms. Cureton has a rich-mama, nor a rich-hubby to finance wrongful termination lawsuits thus Ms. Sheffield knew that she COULD get away with “capricious” firings.
FACT:
Unlike United Airlines that had a union that could protect United’s employees from United’s executive Jill Sheffield, the Carmel Foundation’s employees are not unionized and do not have a union to protect them from Ms. Sheffield.(and her spy, Carlos).
MORAL:
Since the Carmel Foundation employees do not have a union to protect them from Jill Sheffield’s “whimsical” firings, one should not seek employment at the Carmel Foundation unless one has a rich-husband, rich-relative or rich-friend who will be willing to finance your wrongful termination lawsuit because the threat of a wrongful termination lawsuit is your only job security at the Carmel Foundation.

Monday, November 3rd = monthly(tough) pork chops
Every month we complain about the TOUGH pork chops. Too tough for seniors to cut or chew. When you have one diner get up and get steak knives for EVERYONE at the table, you’ve got a problem. A senior center should NOT be serving meat so tough that it cannot be cut because if it cannot be cut, our old teeth cannot chew it.
Kelly and Jill don’t seem to care about anything except the bottom line. If it’s cheap, serve it. If the members can’t chew it, they can jolly well throw it out,
Wednesday, NOV 5th
Carmel Foundation offered its flu shots AFTER lots of seniors already had the flu for a month.
The current epidemic started a full month ago.
Giving flu shots a full month after the epidemic began is NOT acceptable.
The epidemic began the BEGINNING of OCT
The Carmel Foundation needed its flu shots in SEPT.
Saturday 11 a.m.
9 people in Jill’s so-called Cafe
but NO coffee,
A Cafe with NO coffee?
Jill must want to kill Saturdays.
again, another Saturday, with no coffee . . . a really COLD Saturday with no coffee . . . and no fire in the fireplace . . . is Jill really so cheap that on a very COLD Saturday, we can’t pay $1 for a cup of HOT coffee? And how much would the gas cost for the gas log in the fireplace to be turned on for six hours on a COLD Saturday? It’s not like the receptionist has to rub sticks together to start the fire . . . they’re gas logs . . . they turn on with a key or the flip of a switch.
The Carmel Foundation could AND should be a WARM, welcoming clubhouse on a COLD winter day but instead it is as cold as Jill’s heart.
When John Freitas ran the Carmel Foundation, the CF provided:
– Medicare part D (Drugs) advice
– discounted transportation to medical appointments (VanGo)
These are among the many former services that have been discontinued by Jill.
FREE Medicare part D (Drug) advice is provided by the ALLIANCE ON AGING.
Discounted transportation to medical appointments is provided by ITN.
FREE legal advice is provided by LEGAL SERVICES FOR SENIORS.

For many years I dined at the Carmel Foundation every Thanksgiving and every Christmas, UNTIL Kelly Gilpin served her first Thanksgiving dinner after Jill Sheffield ill-advisedly terminated longtime Chef Gayle Cureton.
Chef Gayle wanted those of us who are the elder equivalent of orphans to have a pleasant holiday dinner at the Carmel Foundation,
All wanna-be cook Kelly cared about was making a profit, members be damned!
The Carmel Foundation is worth THIRTEEN MILLION ($13,000,000.00) and Kelly wanted to make a profit on the members on Thanksgiving.
I had the great misfortune to be sitting at Table #1 (explanation forthcoming).
Tightwad Kelly, sent out bowls of food that were HALF EMPTY UPON ARRIVAL.
Consequently by the time the bowls made it HALF way around the table, the bowls were EMPTY.
Those of us who had NO food, asked our server to take the EMPTY bowls back for refills.
Our server returned from the kitchen with a message from Kelly that she would refill Table #1’s bowls IF there was any food left AFTER Tables 2 through 12 were served.
At Table #1, four of us sat and watched the other four eat while eleven (11) other tables were served because Kelly sent out HALF EMPTY bowls.
Kelly, guess what? HALF EMPTY bowls do NOT feed eight.
I will NEVER again sit “foodless” watching others eat because of Kelly’s CHEAPNESS.
Today Nielsen’s Market had BIG “To Go” containers with enough:
– turkey (light or dark, your choice)
– stuffing
– mashed potatoes and gravy
for TWO people for $10 .
1 person = $10 at the Carmel Foundation (a 501(c)(3) NON-profit)
2 people = $10 at Nielsen’s (a FOR-profit)
I should clarify that the four of us FINALLY did get food BUT NOT until AFTER the first four had finished eating. We sat and watched them eat, and then they had to sit and watch us eat. NOT the way a so-called “Family Style” dinner is supposed to be served!

Board members probably do not realize that when Jill inherited the Carmel Foundation, the Foundation was open on Sundays. Open, and well attended. There were “The Sunday Regulars” most of whom attended on Sundays only because they were not available to attend any of the other six days. Since Jill eliminated Sundays, there is no reason for “The Sunday Regulars” to be members, no reason to pay dues.
Sundays were like Saturdays, only one part time employee, probably minimum wage, total payroll probably less than $100.
The Carmel Foundation was “founded” about the time Jill was born. Jill did not “build” the Foundation. Jill “inherited” the CF. And eliminating Sundays is just one of many ways that Jill is “unbuilding” it.
Who is selecting the Saturday movies?
They are not checking ratings.

THANKS to the Alliance on Aging
once upon a time the Carmel Foundation provided Medicare D advice for seniors but it was one of many services that has been discontinued by Jill Sheffield. Since Medicare D advice is now offered by the Alliance on Aging ONLY, it makes sense for me to make my year end donation to the Alliance on Aging ONLY.
Today, Wednesday, December 9th, you have your choice, you can go to the Carmel Foundation’s Wednesday program, unfortunately probably not very entertaining (they usually aren’t) OR you can go to the Sally Griffin Senior Center in Pacific Grove at 1:00 for the presentation in honor the 100th anniversary of Frank Sinatra, undoubtedly more entertaining that the CF’s presentation on essential oils,

Attendance would have been higher if it had NOT been at La Playa. Do 80 members eat in the dining room daily? Does the Foundation have more major donors than daily diners?
Thanksgiving and Christmas are rough for seniors who are alone. The Carmel Foundations TG & Xmas meals are greatly appreciated but there is something else that would make those two days better for members who live alone, while costing the Foundation not one cent.
The kitchen staff arrives Thanksgiving and Christmas mornings very early.
At 9:00 a.m. have the kitchen staff unlock the OTHER buildings.
NOT the dining room but the:
– fireplace lounge with coffee/tea/cocoa/muffins
– library
– card room
– game room
so the members who live alone could arrive at 9:00 a.m. for hot drinks/muffins and mix and mingle, play games, read the papers, etc.
IF need be, a volunteer librarian (Marge?) could be in the library to insure that nothing disappears.
PS: IF there is a volunteer onsite, the volunteer should receive a “comp” dinner.

“Beloved pet duck returns to seniors in assisted-care homes”

A sweet mallard duck named Juanita has returned home to SENIORS in an ASSISTED LIVING FACILITY north of San Francisco.
KNTV reports Wednesday that residents of Bello Gardens cared for the duck for a year and a half before it disappeared in September.
It turns out a neighbor had taken the duck to a nearby wild-care center, also in Marin County, Staff there refused to return the duck, saying federal law prohibits people from keeping wild animals as pets.
But with the help from a CONGRESSMAN and animal groups, the SENIORS acquired the licenses required to bring Juanita home, Bello Gardens also hired a “duck educator” to create a teaching program around Juanita.
Resident Larita Clark tells the news station that Juanita cheers her up when she’s feeling LONELY.
Marin County seniors in assisted living can have a WILD duck but Jill Sheffield will NOT allow domesticated cats/dogs in Carmel’s subsidized housing for low income seniors.
Cats/dogs would assist in alleviating depression (rampant among seniors).
Dogs would force the senior to WALK the dog however many times a day the dog needs to go outdoors to poop . . . walking is good exercise for seniors (the only exercise some seniors are capable for doing).
Based on the above,
cats are good for seniors mentally.
dogs are good for seniors mentally and physically.
Jill, we’re not asking for wild ducks, just domesticated pets.
We need SAM FARR and JASON BURNETT to intervene on the behalf of seniors.
The Board needs to know that in years gone by, an ENTIRE PAGE of the monthly newsletter was filled with the names of members who had donated (above and beyond their dues) THAT month.
Two lists of names of members who had donated that month (a dozen or more names in each list).
One list was the names of members who had donated that month in memory of a recent decedent.
The second list was the names of members who had donated that month in honor of the living (birthday, anniversary, thank you, whatever).
Now instead of several dozen donations per month, there are just be a few.

Needless to say, more than one member is passing away each month BUT the donations are being made to other organizations instead of the Carmel Foundation.
Current members are voting with their wallets.
Past members (who are still alive) voted with their feet AND wallets.
And the vote is a vote of disapproval of Jill.
It is time for Jill to retire!

The Carmel Foundation’s Board needs to figure out WHY the Peace of Mind Dog Rescue received 29 times MORE $$$$$$ than the Carmel Foundation.
As has been posted on this blog many times, past members and current members are “voting with their wallets” (zipping their wallets closed as a vote of no confidence).
Jill should have the good sense to understand that her disapproval rating is having a very NEGATIVE impact of the Foundation’s donations.
If Jill would retire, it would have a very POSITIVE impact on the Foundation’s donations.
Jill’s excuse was that seniors don’t need VanGo because they can use ITN. Well, guess what? While the Carmel Foundation only received donations from 19 donors, ITN only received donations from 10 seniors for a grand total of $415.
Only 10 seniors thought enough of ITN to donate $415.
And, only 19 seniors thought enough of the “current” Carmel Foundation to donate.
The Board needs to make changes to the Carmel Foundation and those changes need to start at the very TOP.
According to the 2000 Census, the PENINSULA (Monterey, Pacific Grove, Carmel and Pebble Beach) had 53,808 residents. Almost 54,000 residents on the peninsula and ONLY 20 donated to the Carmel Foundation.
MC Gives! (2015) over 4,000 donors donated OVER THREE-MILLION (OVER $3,000,000.00) and only $8,753 was donated to the Carmel Foundation.
jill’s toady, carlos, has also driven away seniors, past members won’t return and donate again until both jill and carlos are gone.
The Carmel Foundation will be offering a Driver Safety Program on February 8 from 12:30-4:30 = FOUR hours.
Right after lunch, guaranteed to put us all to sleep.
FOUR hours straight is way too long for seniors.
Seniors cannot sit FOUR hours.
It would be less torturous if it was:
TWO hours BEFORE lunch
LUNCH
TWO more hours AFTER lunch.
Better: TWO hours on TWO different days.
Best: FOUR hours on FOUR different days.
Voters did not approve of Carly Fiorina.
Carmel’s seniors do not approve of Jill Sheffield.
The difference?
Ms. Fiorina had the good sense to give up.
Ms. Sheffield needs to have the good sense to resign or be fired!
